Phoebe and Will ©Jen Christabel 2005
The sun threw it’s tentacles of warmth across the garden, glancing and bouncing over the reflective pools of light in the pond. Two lovers lay on the grass side, by side, staring upwards towards the halo of light.
Phoebe yawned, stretched and murmured quietly, ‘This is soooo lovely, the heat is making me all sleepy.’
Will turned over, away from the sun, to face her, ‘The sun lights up your face Phoebe, you are so beautiful,’ his voice murmured with love.
She giggled, ‘Oh get on with you! I’m no different to anybody else!’ Her eyelashes flickered as she screwed her eyes up to smile.
‘No! You are. You have a certain beauty and qualities no other female has. I love you Phoebe,’ he reached out to touch her and she rolled on to her back laughing.
‘I love you too Will,’ she spoke softly and warmly, meeting his touch with her own.
‘When we have kids Phoebe who do you think they will be like?’ he enquired casually.
‘Kids! Who said anything about children?’ Will’s words had somewhat angered Phoebe and she sat up to look him directly in the eye.
‘Well, we have been together a long time and….and…I was just thinking that’s all. Please don’t get all huffy with me Phoebe.’
Her black hair shone like coal in the bright sunlight and her eyes danced and flickered with diamonds.
‘I’m sorry Will. It’s just…children…at our age…I mean, I mean we’re too young that’s all,’ she spoke as kindly as she could knowing that Will could easily be hurt with remonstrations.
His deep blue eyes were like pools of water as they looked dreamily into her face.
‘But can I at least dream Phoebe, and think that one day here, in our garden we will be surrounded by beautiful children playing around us?’ Will gently touched her arm and moved to nuzzle her ear.
Giggling, Phoebe said, ‘That tickles Will and you know it! But yes, I suppose we can at least dream. We have our whole lives ahead of us and I don’t want to spoil things with being tied down just yet.’
‘Phoebe, Will, come on tea’s ready!’ a voice called from the kitchen door and the two kittens jumped up and scampered towards their owner.
