Two hands, one gnarled and strong,
the other, life's energy ebbing slowly;
clasped lovingly on the stark, white sheet,
united as one.
But the parting is near.
The tide is stronger now.
Life's pull is waning and there is no fear.
Silence. One infinitesimal moment from warmth to emptiness,
then the cloak of comfort descends.
Is that the whispering of Angels wings?

When I Retire…
“On waking; deadlines, some self-created, would tumble through my mind, falling over each other in their rush to be heeded, each one like a child clamouring to be the first to gain my attention, leaving no time for the self-indulgence of writing. I’m sure many of you would know the feeling.
When I retire I promised myself. Whilst still in gainful employment I attended a one-day workshop on Creative Writing which so enthused me, that even though my days were hectic, I determined to set aside a regular time to write. The day arrived. The blank page sat in front of me; pen in hand I was ready to start; to be A WRITER; to let the writer within merge!
Disaster!
Nothing - not only a blank page but also a blank mind. How could this be? I’d longed for this moment; a quiet house, just me and the dog and endless hours of the day ahead of me. I had dreamt and mentally drooled over this instance, planning how I would sit down in my favourite chair and pen poised, a tumbling waterfall of words splashing like spray in all directions would materialize, waiting for my pen to capture and own them.
It was not to be. I made a few more attempts, then thought – When I retire.
Well, I retired and found the time to sit and muse – and muse I did, these musings followed by feelings of guilt that I should be ‘doing something’. I wasn’t used to this ‘sitting around’.
Since those early days I’ve had moments when my fingers have itched to put pen to paper; tendrils of ideas, words and thoughts weaving their way through my mind then tumbling one after the other in their eagerness to be chronicled. I have listened to those urgings, penning the thoughts that clamored for attention.
I have days too when the ‘blankness’ is there, the narrative canvas empty, that precious space occupied instead, by the humdrum, everyday chores of life. I don’t despair as once I did. I take a deep breath, and try to empty my mind of those demanding ‘children’ and allow peace and tranquility to descend.
It doesn’t always work; in fact not as frequent as I would like it to.
Perhaps the next workshop I attend should be one on ‘Successful Meditation’.”

One day I picked up the free daily newspaper which is handed out in the city of Brisbane, and there on the back page was a full page advertisement from the new, first, cut price airline operating from Australia - called Air Asia.
" Shop 'til you drop screamed the headline. " On perusal I discovered the airline was offering free flights to Kuala Lumpur from the Gold Coast airport. Once I arrived back home I jumped on my computer and searched the URL for possible flights and days. |

For you, I would hide my tearsI would even pretend to smileCause for me you are always in a light which is limeYou may not be perfectYou may not be all that you would have wished to beBut I know, you are the only one who is perfect for me I keep dreaming to be with you all night and dayCause you are the one who makes me feel all happy and gayThese words may not be enough to describe what I really feel for youAnd somehow deep down inside, I know you feel the same to! |

(I wrote this on a scrap of paper I tore out of a puzzle book in which I was writing. I happened to glance out of the window of the plane and saw a beautiful portrait of nature at her most stunning.) High in the sky between Singapore and Darwin – crossing the Indian Ocean in a Jumbo 777. |

He waits, his slovenly clothed body blending into the shadows. It had been a long time – too long, the peelers had nearly got him last time but he was too quick for the bastards though he’d had to move on, too risky to hang around. This place should be ok, he’d remembered it from years ago – it hadn’t changed – still a shit place, just what he liked. Ears pricked as he heard footsteps. |

A Flight too Far Among the modest amount of information revealed at the CIA's new Science and Technology museum, according to a December Associated Press story, is that early versions of a tiny spy camera mounted to the back of a pigeon nonetheless failed because they were too heavy, forcing the pigeon in one test "to walk home." Transition My father and I were members of the ‘transition generations’. In the early days of the Republic, some eighty-five percent of the nation’s workers were actually needed to feed themselves and the other 15% of the population. Over the next century and a half, this condition gradually changed. By 1980, no more than 10% of the population was required to feed all Americans and a large portion of the rest of the world.

The Best I've just raturned from On Campus at Macquarie University, in Sydney. What a marvellous two days I spent in the classroom with my fellow students. The unit we are studying is, Creativity, the Arts and Childhood. I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the lessons, the social aspect and the sheer wonderment of the diversity amongst all of the students and the knowledge of the Lecturers. |
